International Mother Language Day
Today is International Mother Language Day. This day is observed every year to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
It is also observed to encourage people to maintain their knowledge of their mother language while learning and using more than one language. The theme this year is “Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education”.
To foster sustainable development, learners must have access to education in their mother tongue and in other languages. Languages are the most powerful instruments of preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage.
Promoting the dissemination of mother tongues will help create awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions around the world and inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.
