A fresh cross-continental clash has erupted as BNXN forcefully pushed back against claims by Fat Joe that he influenced the singer’s stage name change.
The debate resurfaced after Fat Joe, in a recent sit-down alongside reggae heavyweight Buju Banton, suggested that external pressure, himself included, played a role in prompting the Nigerian star to drop “Buju” from his identity. The implication: the move was made to preserve the legacy of the Jamaican icon.
BNXN isn’t having it.
Taking to social media, the Afrofusion act dismissed the claim outright, describing it as false and misleading. He made it clear that his 2022 transition from Buju to BNXN was a personal and professional decision rooted in branding clarity and copyright considerations, not outside influence.
In a pointed response, BNXN urged the American rapper to better understand African music culture, while also calling out what he sees as a recurring pattern of inaccurate commentary surrounding Afrobeats and its global narrative.
The back-and-forth adds fuel to an already simmering tension, with Fat Joe’s previous remarks about Afrobeats and African artists drawing criticism from fans and industry voices alike.
For BNXN, however, the stance remains firm and unapologetic: his name, his brand, and his journey are entirely his own, and any attempt to rewrite that story will be met head-on.
