Global Afrobeats sensation Davido has returned to Babcock University with a powerful promise to give back to the institution that helped shape his journey to stardom.
More than 11 years after graduating from the university, the award-winning singer made an emotional homecoming visit that quickly turned into a moment of celebration, nostalgia, and inspiration for students across the campus.
Davido, born David Adeleke, was received by Vice Chancellor Professor Afolarin Ojewole, members of the university management, and hundreds of excited students who gathered to catch a glimpse of the music star as he revisited familiar places on campus.
During the visit, the singer toured the university’s facilities, including the music department and WAD Media Studio, while reflecting on how his time at Babcock played a major role in building the discipline and confidence that later propelled him to international fame.
“You can’t tell my story without Babcock,” Davido said as he addressed students and officials during the visit.
In what many described as the highlight of the visit, the Afrobeats star unveiled plans to support a major transformation of the university’s music department through the development of a modern music complex equipped with professional-grade studio facilities and creative learning equipment.
According to Davido, Nigeria’s entertainment industry has evolved into a global economic force, and institutions must begin investing seriously in creative education to prepare young talents for the future.
He also encouraged students not to abandon education while chasing fame, stressing that academic discipline and structure remain important tools for long-term success in the entertainment industry.
The visit also carried personal significance for the singer, who fondly recalled meeting his wife, Chioma Rowland, during his years at the university. He added that many of his earliest fans and supporters were fellow Babcock students who believed in his music long before global recognition arrived.
Vice Chancellor Professor Ojewole praised Davido and the Adeleke family for their continued support for education and youth development, noting that the singer’s proposed investment could help position the university as a leading hub for music and creative arts training in Nigeria.
The university leadership also hinted at broader plans to expand the department into a full-fledged school dedicated to music, media, and creative innovation — a vision that may now gain fresh momentum through Davido’s involvement.
