Nollywood star Adesua Etomi-Wellington has opened up about her struggle with hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe pregnancy illness often mistaken for routine morning sickness.
The actress took to social media to express her frustration over the widespread lack of awareness surrounding the condition, which left her physically and emotionally drained during her second pregnancy.
Her revelation comes after the tragic news of Jess Cronshaw, a UK woman who reportedly died by suicide after enduring extreme pregnancy sickness that left her bedridden. Reacting to the heartbreaking story, Adesua shared her own experience, writing, “When I talk about the seriousness of hyperemesis gravidarum, people don’t get it, and I hate it.”
Hyperemesis gravidarum is far more severe than typical morning sickness, leading to prolonged nausea, vomiting, dehydration, and drastic weight loss. Unlike regular pregnancy nausea, which usually eases after the first trimester, this condition can persist throughout pregnancy, significantly impacting a woman’s quality of life.
Despite the challenges, Adesua expressed deep gratitude to her husband, singer Banky W, her family, friends, and medical team for their unwavering support. The couple welcomed their second child in 2024.
By sharing her personal ordeal, Adesua hopes to create more awareness about hyperemesis gravidarum and encourage better understanding and support for pregnant women battling the condition. Her story adds to the growing conversation about maternal health and the need for greater sensitivity toward pregnancy complications.
