Nollywood star Uzor Arukwe has taken a bold stance in defense of responsible partner care, pushing back against critics who labeled his character in Love in Every Word as a “simp.”
The Omoni Oboli-directed film features Arukwe as Odogwu Obiora, a wealthy Igbo man who spares no expense in showering his partner, Chioma (played by Bambam), with love and luxury.
While many female viewers hailed the character as the ideal partner, some male critics took issue with the portrayal, claiming it sets unrealistic financial expectations in relationships. One social media user even accused the film of misrepresenting Anambra men, arguing that it glorifies men who excessively cater to their partners.
Arukwe Claps Back at Critics
Responding to the backlash, Arukwe dismissed the notion that taking care of one’s partner is a sign of weakness. “Taking care of your woman and spending money on her doesn’t make you a simp. It only makes you a responsible man. How else do you show love to your partner if you can’t take care of their needs from the abundance of your wealth?”
His statement has since reignited heated debates on social media about financial responsibility in relationships. While some applaud his perspective, arguing that providing for a loved one is an act of love and leadership, others warn against equating financial generosity with emotional depth or masculinity.
