NCC Shuts Down Illegical Site In Bold Piracy Crackdown

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has wielded its enforcement power, pulling down the plug on MovieBox.ng, for pirated films, music, and live sports.

In what many are calling a landmark moment for Nigeria’s digital content industry, the take-down, executed on July 20, 2025, signals not just a domain shutdown but a full-scale declaration of war against digital piracy.

The site—popular among Nigerian youths for offering free, unauthorized access to Nollywood blockbusters, Afrobeats albums, and premium football streams—had long been a thorn in the side of copyright holders. But this time, it ran out of escape routes.

According to NCC Director-General Dr. John Asein, MovieBox.ng operated through an intricate network of clone domains and mirror sites, constantly shifting to dodge detection. But with the support of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) and new powers under the Copyright Act, 2022, the commission tracked the offenders and took decisive action.

“This isn’t just about one site,” said Asein. “It’s about dismantling a web of piracy built to undermine Nigeria’s creative economy.”

Beyond Just a Shutdown

NCC is now going beyond MovieBox.ng. It has launched a nationwide sweep targeting associated mirror sites, stream-ripping platforms, and offshore IPs enabling illegal access. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and digital intermediaries have been put on high alert, with formal takedown instructions delivered and compliance timelines issued.

But the NCC isn’t stopping there—it’s also educating the public. From malware risks to stolen card details, the agency is warning Nigerians about the hidden costs of “free” content.

Backing from the Creative Industry

The move has triggered widespread applause across Nollywood, the Nigerian music scene, and media broadcasters. Artists, producers, and distributors who’ve lost billions to piracy are calling the MovieBox bust a turning point in copyright enforcement.

This operation is part of the broader “STOP” (Stand Together Against Online Piracy) campaign launched in early 2025. The initiative aims to unite stakeholders—from telecom giants to tech platforms—in a common fight to protect Nigeria’s intellectual property frontier.
