Afrobeats sensation and street-hop maestro Slimcase has sparked an industry-wide conversation after boldly declaring that today’s Afrobeats sound is “getting boring.”
The artist, known for his infectious energy and signature street anthems, urged fellow musicians to slow down, refresh, and rediscover their creative spark — taking a cue from global icon Rihanna.
In a fiery message shared via Instagram Stories, Slimcase lamented the constant stream of singles, albums, and EPs flooding the Nigerian music scene. According to him, the endless cycle of releases is diluting the genre’s originality and overloading listeners.
“Too many songs, too many albums. Una too dey put una self for pressure for this Niger sha,” he wrote.
“Take a chill pill and be like Rihanna. Do other things and come back, give us a fresh vibe.”
Slimcase, whose real name is Oluwafemi Oladapo, argued that this unrelenting pace is slowly draining Afrobeats of its soul.
“Your sounds are getting boring because dem dey come too much in a year. Every day, every second — singles and albums dey kiii Afrobeats. Gradually, it’s not fun anymore,” he added.
To drive home his point, the “Shaku Shaku” hitmaker revealed that he plans to release only one song in 2025, describing it as his personal contribution to bringing balance back to the industry.
His comments echo a growing concern among music lovers and critics — that Afrobeats, while globally dominant, may be losing its experimental edge under the weight of commercial pressure. As Slimcase sees it, artists must prioritize quality over quantity, the same way Rihanna stepped away from music to explore fashion, beauty, and business — only to remain one of the most anticipated voices in pop.
Whether his message will inspire change remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Slimcase has stirred the pot, challenging Afrobeats creators to slow down, evolve, and make the music feel fresh again.
