Super Eagles Defeat Lesotho 2–1 In World Cup Qualifier

The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a crucial 2–1 victory over Lesotho in Polokwane on Friday night, reigniting their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign after a tense, hard-fought encounter.

First Half: Eagles Dominate but Fail to Break Through

From the onset, Nigeria took control of possession, dictating the pace and pressing Lesotho deep into their own half.
Victor Osimhen was at the heart of every attacking move, testing the defenders with sharp runs and clever link-up play.

However, Lesotho stood firm, maintaining a compact defensive shape that frustrated the Super Eagles throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Despite several close chances, the first half ended goalless, leaving fans anxious for a breakthrough.

Second Half: Penalty Sparks Nigeria’s Revival

The much-needed breakthrough came in the 55th minute when a Lesotho defender handled the ball in the box.
Captain William Troost-Ekong stepped up with confidence, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 1–0 for Nigeria.

The goal boosted the team’s momentum, and they began to move the ball with greater intent.
Fifteen minutes from time, Victor Osimhen turned provider, setting up Akor Adams, who calmly slotted home his debut goal for the Super Eagles to extend the lead to 2–0.

Late Scare for Nigeria

Lesotho, however, refused to go quietly. In the 83rd minute, a poorly defended corner saw Kalake capitalize on a loose ball to pull one back for the visitors, setting up a nervy finish.

The closing minutes were tense as Lesotho pressed for an equalizer, but Nigeria’s defense held firm, ensuring the three points stayed in their grasp.

Relief and Reflection

At full-time, there was a sense of relief and renewed hope. The Super Eagles had done just enough to keep their qualification campaign alive, despite moments of defensive uncertainty.

Troost-Ekong’s leadership, Osimhen’s influence, and Akor Adams’ dream debut stood out in a match that tested both nerves and resilience.

With the win, Nigeria climbs further up their qualifying group, but tougher battles lie ahead. The result in Polokwane is a reminder that while talent wins matches, consistency will determine their World Cup fate.
