Lagos is about to glitter with stardust as the 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) lights up the iconic Eko Hotel and Suites on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
Hosted by Africa Magic in partnership with MultiChoice Nigeria, this year’s AMVCA is more than an awards show—a cultural crescendo that reaffirms the continent’s cinematic soul.
Four Days of Glamour, Icons, and Celebration
To deepen the experience, AMVCA 2025 rolls out a four-day fiesta beginning Wednesday, May 7. The extravaganza opens with Icons Night, a reverent tribute to the legends and visionaries who’ve shaped African film and television. It’s a curtain-raiser laced with legacy, setting the tone for a weekend where stars will not only shine—they’ll align.
From curated panel sessions to fashion showcases and industry mixers, the buildup is layered with cultural flavor and creative exchange, culminating in the grand finale on Saturday night, where cinematic excellence takes center stage.
New Sounds, New Standards: A Nod to Music
This year, the AMVCA breaks fresh ground with the introduction of a new category: Best Music Score. It’s a long-awaited recognition of the unsung heroes behind the soundtracks that bring African stories to life. From haunting orchestras to Afrobeat-driven scores, this category shines a spotlight on the sonic architects of emotion in film.
Leading the Charge: The Nominees
Announced on March 23, the 2025 AMVCA nominees list reads like a who’s who of African storytelling. Femi Adebayo’s “Seven Doors” leads with a staggering 11 nominations, including Best Movie and Best Director, reaffirming Adebayo’s place in Nollywood’s elite. “Lisabi: The Uprising” follows closely with 10 nominations, captivating voters with its historical depth and visual brilliance.
Also in the running is “Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre”, a fan favorite that merges folklore with fantasy, earning nods across major categories. Together, these titles highlight the range and richness of African cinema—bold in theme, daring in execution.
The People’s Voice Meets Industry Prestige
The AMVCA remains a perfect balance of audience engagement and expert curation. While nine categories are open to public voting (until May 4), the other 18 will be decided by a respected jury led by seasoned filmmaker Femi Odugbemi. It’s a blend that ensures both popularity and artistry are rewarded.
A Decade Plus One of Storytelling Excellence
Marking its 11th year, the AMVCA is more than a trophy night—it’s a movement. It has become the ultimate barometer for African film and TV excellence, a platform where tradition meets transformation, and local voices echo globally. As filmmakers, actors, writers, and producers gather under one roof, the continent pauses to celebrate not just achievements, but aspirations.
Final Curtain Call
As the AMVCA 2025 draws closer, the anticipation is electric. Who will win? What moments will go viral? Which stars will own the night? One thing is certain—African storytelling is rising, and the AMVCA remains its most prestigious stage.
