Asake’s Journey: Why He Picked YBNL Over Chocolate City

Before Asake became a household name under YBNL Nation, he was moments away from signing with another powerhouse in Nigerian music, Chocolate City.

But fate had other plans, and that near‑deal would pave the way for one of Afrobeats’ most explosive success stories.

Osagie Onobun (10Ten), Chocolate City’s Head of A&R, revealed that in 2022, the label had prepared contracts and was ready to bring Asake onboard. Everything seemed set, but the singer suddenly disappeared from the process. When asked, Asake explained he wanted to “test a release and see how it goes first.” That release was “Omo Ope”, a track that introduced his signature fusion of Yoruba melodies, streetwise energy, and catchy hooks to the world.

Soon after, Olamide, the visionary behind YBNL, swooped in and signed Asake — a move that would launch the singer into meteoric stardom. His YBNL debut hit “Sungba”, and the chart-topping album Mr Money with the Vibe cemented his place in the industry, blending street credibility with mainstream appeal.

Asake’s journey to fame was anything but instant. Before YBNL, he spent years honing his craft, releasing tracks like “Lady”, working as a road manager and dancer, and persistently sending music to top industry players. His determination paid off when he finally convinced Olamide to give him a shot — even admitting he had to beg for the contract.

While some fans speculate what might have happened had he joined Chocolate City, home to stars like M.I Abaga, Ice Prince, and CKay, the consensus is that YBNL offered the perfect platform for his artistry. Olamide himself has praised Asake’s “authenticity and craftsmanship,” recognising the dedication and vision that set him apart.

Ultimately, Asake’s decision to step away from Chocolate City and embrace YBNL changed the trajectory of his career. That choice not only solidified his rise but also left a lasting imprint on Afrobeats, shaping the sound and style that continues to dominate charts today.
