Nigerian music powerhouse Ayra Starr has etched her name in history at the 2025 MOBO Awards, becoming the first African female artist to win the prestigious Best International Act category.
The star-studded ceremony, held for the first time at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, was a celebration of Black excellence in music and culture.
A Night of Double Triumph
Ayra Starr’s record-breaking night didn’t end there—she also bagged the Best African Music Act award, making her the first woman in 16 years to claim the title. This milestone reinforces her dominance in the Afrobeats scene and her rising global influence.
Overwhelmed with joy, the “Rush” hitmaker took the stage, saying:
“This is my first MOBO, and this is the first time I’m winning a MOBO Award—make some noise! I am actually shaking right now. I am nervous. Thank you so much to everyone who supported me, to my team—my amazing MOB-STARS.”
A Landmark Year for African Music
The 2025 MOBO Awards also saw major wins from artists across different genres. British rapper Bashy clinched Best Hip-Hop Act and Album of the Year for “Being Poor Is Expensive,” while Darkoo dominated the night with Best Female Act and Song of the Year for “Favourite Girl.”
Ayra Starr’s monumental victories mark a defining moment in the ongoing global ascent of Afrobeats. Her success at the MOBOs not only elevates her career but further cements Africa’s influence on the international music stage.
