Seven Liverpool players have been nominated for one of the most prestigious football prize, the Ballon d’Or award.
As a result of their feat and achievement in the recent Champions League , Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Georginio Wijnaldum, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alisson Becker have made the 30-man shortlist.
The reoccurring history of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi currently sharing the record for most Ballon d’Or wins with five, continues.
They are expectant that such history will change this time as they are expecting to take the lead outright after Ronaldo and Messi have won domestic league titles with Juventus and Barcelona respectively, and Ronaldo also led Portugal to victory in the Uefa Nations League.
However, Liverpool centre-back Van Vijk is among the Ballon d’Or favourites after edging out both Ronaldo and Messi to win Fifa’s the Best award earlier this year.
To be the best-represented club on the shortlist, Van Dijk and his six team-mates’ nominations have proven it, while five players have done well to be nominated from Premier League champions, Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp’s star men have proudly received their nomination certificates at Melwood as their pictures were released on Tuesday.
On Monday, December 2, the Ballon d’Or prize, created by France Football Magazine, will be announced at an awards ceremony.
