Renowned crossdresser, Idris Okuneye well known as Bobrisky has publicly implored Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy to pardon fellow entertainer Speed Darlington, who has been detained since November 27, 2024, over allegations of defamation and cyberstalking directed at Burna Boy.
The discord between Burna Boy and Speed Darlington intensified when Darlington made several disparaging remarks about Burna Boy on social media platforms. These actions prompted Burna Boy to file a formal complaint, leading to Darlington’s arrest in Lagos and subsequent transfer to Abuja for further investigation.
Expressing concern over Darlington’s extended detention, Bobrisky took to Instagram to urge Burna Boy to show clemency. In his posts, Bobrisky underscored the harsh realities of prison life, suggesting that Darlington may lack the financial means to secure better conditions within the facility. He stated, “Please, Burna Boy, forgive Speed. Prison is not a nice place. I don’t think he has the money for the VIP section because it’s expensive.”
Bobrisky further criticized fans who previously encouraged Darlington’s controversial behavior, emphasizing the importance of holding public figures accountable. He remarked, “Fans, learn how to tell your favourites the truth when they are crossing the line. You all were applauding Speed when he was saying unpleasant things. Now, none of you is in prison with him.”
Speed Darlington’s legal representative has alleged that Burna Boy is leveraging his influence to prolong Darlington’s detention, despite court orders for his release. The lawyer stated, “There is no gainsaying that there are a lot of powerful persons interested in this matter. On one hand, we have Burna Boy, and on the other hand, the police seem to be acting based on sentiments and emotions rather than the law.”
Concerns have also been raised about Darlington’s health and well-being in custody, noting that he has been unwell and inadequately fed. His family is reportedly heartbroken and traumatized.
Upon his initial release on bail in October 2024, Speed Darlington addressed his detention during an Instagram live session. He claimed that the police mishandled his case and seized his phone. Darlington emphasized that he harbors no ill will towards Burna Boy but questioned the rationale behind the arrest, stating, “I have no beef with Burna Boy… It is the Nigerian police that did me dirty.”
The situation involving Burna Boy and Speed Darlington underscores the complexities of addressing defamation and cyberstalking within the entertainment industry. Bobrisky’s public appeal for clemency highlights concerns about the use of legal measures in personal disputes and the conditions of detention facilities.
As the case unfolds, it raises important questions about the balance between holding individuals accountable for their actions and ensuring that legal processes are conducted fairly and humanely
