Grammy-winning Nigerian superstar Burna Boy faced a brief hiccup at a Moroccan airport just hours before headlining the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Fan Zone in Rabat, CAF President Patrice Motsepe has revealed.
The hold-up wasn’t criminal but the result of routine customs procedures after officials flagged the singer’s impressive haul of gold jewellery. Motsepe explained that he was contacted by authorities and stepped in to help clarify the matter, ensuring Burna Boy could continue his journey without further delay.
“I was called… they said ‘Burna Boy has too many beautiful pieces of jewellery and, like in every country, he just has to declare them,’” Motsepe recounted. The issue was quickly resolved, with no charges filed.
Undeterred, Burna Boy delivered a high-energy performance on January 16, sharing the stage with Ghanaian star Stonebwoy and Moroccan performers Stormy and Jaylann, thrilling fans at the AFCON Fan Zone.
The brief airport drama has ignited conversations online about the importance of declaring high-value items when traveling internationally — a reminder that even global icons must navigate standard customs rules.
Despite the momentary setback, Burna Boy’s appearance went off without a hitch, adding star power to one of Africa’s biggest sporting celebrations.
