Grammy-winning Afro-fusion star Burna Boy has ignited fresh public debate after revealing that his long and winding spiritual journey—spanning Christianity, Islam, and extensive personal research—has left him more uncertain than ever about the true nature of faith.
Speaking in a recent conversation on the streaming platform Playboymax, the globally acclaimed artist disclosed that his quest for spiritual clarity has only deepened his confusion. Born Damini Ogulu and raised in a Christian home in Port Harcourt, Burna Boy said his early religious identity was shaped by his family and childhood environment. He later embraced Islam in a personal search for deeper truth, a decision he previously confirmed to several Nigerian news outlets.
But instead of resolving his uncertainties, Burna Boy said his study of different religions and philosophies has taken him into a new phase of questioning.
“Growing up, I was a Christian and then I converted to Islam. It’s like I’ve studied it all, but I’m still out here trying to find out what is really going on,” he said. “The more I research, the more confused I get.”
The singer emphasised that he no longer identifies strictly with any religion, describing himself instead as “very spiritual.” According to him, organised religion often functions as “a controlled mechanism,” and his personal research continually reveals scientific contradictions across various religious texts.
“In all my research, there is always one scientific fact that goes against every book,” he said. “Everyone is coming up with versions that are confusing me. What I do know is there is something up there protecting me. That’s why when I pray, I feel like I am being heard.”
