Champions League: Benzema Hat-Trick Puts Real In Command Against Chelsea

Karim Benzema scored a hat-trick that fired Real Madrid to a 3-1 win against Champions League holders Chelsea in the quarter-final first leg at Stamford Bridge.

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti made a winning return to the club where he won the Premier League and FA Cup double after veteran France striker Benzema delivered his latest masterclass.

Benzema, 34 and fresh from the treble that sunk Paris St-Germain in the last 16, punished holders Chelsea with two magnificent headers in the space of three minutes midway through the first half.

Kai Havertz‘s header reduced the deficit before the interval, but Benzema punished a woeful mistake from Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy seconds after the restart to complete his treble.

Ancelotti’s side are in pole position to advance to the semifinals as they return to Madrid for the second leg on 12 April.

After losing to Chelsea in last season’s Champions League semifinals, Real will have the opportunity to exact revenge at the Bernabeu.
