Croatia Win Ends UEFA Nations League Hopes For France

France’s chances of winning the Nations League for the second year in a row were destroyed after a home defeat to Croatia, which means they will not be able to compete in the finals next year.

The game’s sole goal came in the fifth minute, when Luka Modric converted a penalty after Ibrahima Konate fouled Ante Budimir.

France, which enjoyed a plethora of attacking prowess, three of the top four scorers in Europe’s major leagues, Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappe, and Christopher Nkunku, failed to reach the net despite wasting many chances to rescue a point.

With two points from four games, Didier Deschamps‘ team is at the bottom of Group A1.

“In terms of outcomes, June was a challenging month. We lacked the enthusiasm and strength to compete against teams with bigger resources” said Deschamps.

“We lost a bit of self-confidence along the way but it’s mostly freshness that we lacked. When you play so many games it is very very hard.”

Denmark top the group on nine points – two points above Croatia – after a 2-0 win over Austria.

Jonas Wind scored from Joakim Maehle’s cut-back and then set up Andreas Skov Olsen to slot home their second.

The final two rounds of games will be played in September with France hoping to avoid relegation to League B.
