Bill and Melinda Gates Announce Divorce After 27 Years Of Marriage

Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda Gates, have announced that they’re going their separate ways after 27 years of marriage.

They both took to their individual Twitter accounts on Monday to announce the divorce.

“After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” their statement read. “Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.”

Bill Gates, 65, who co-founded Microsoft Corp, and his spouse, Melinda French Gates, 56, who is co-chair of their philanthropic foundation, met after she joined the software giant as a product manager, and they dated for a few years before marrying in January 1994 in Hawaii.

The billionaire couple have three children and jointly run the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The organisation has spent billions fighting causes such as infectious diseases and encouraging vaccinations in children.

In a separate statement, the Gates Foundation said the couple would remain as co-chairs and trustees of the organization.

“They will continue to work together to shape and approve foundation strategies, advocate for the foundation’s issues, and set the organization’s overall direction,” the foundation’s statement said.

Bill Gates is the fourth wealthiest person in the world, according to Forbes, and is worth $124bn (£89bn).
