Odion Ighalo was twice on target as Manchester United ensured their place in FA Cup quarter final with a comfortable win at Derby County.
The 30-year-old, who signed on loan from Shanghai Shenhua in January, now has three goals from just two starts as he executed two smart finishes to book a tie with Norwich at Carrow Road later this month.
His impressive showing on the night also overshadowed a reunion with United’s all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney at Pride Park.
Rooney had his name chanted throughout by the thousands of away fans and came close with two fine free-kicks.
United took control at Pride Park after 33 minutes when Luke Shaw scored just his second career goal, his volley bouncing over Kelle Roos via a deflection off Jesse Lingard then Ighalo scored the second goal seven minutes later.
Martyn Waghorn went close for Derby after the break but Ighalo ended the contest when he fired home to complete his double with 20 minutes left.
United have won the FA Cup 12 times – one behind Arsenal’s record haul – while Derby have now played in six fifth-round ties since 1999 and failed to reach the quarter-finals on each occasion.
Currenting United have extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine games ahead of Sunday’s derby showdown with Manchester City at Old Trafford.
