International Women’s Day is recognized on the 8th of March every year and it is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
This day which also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality, in some countries is a day of protest while in others, it is a day that celebrates womanhood.
The first International Women’s Day occurred on March 19 in 1911, supported by over one million people. The inaugural event, which included rallies and organized meetings, was a big success in countries such as Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. The March 19 date was chosen because it commemorated the day that the Prussian king promised to introduced votes for women in 1848. The promise gave hope for equality but it was a promise that he failed to keep. The International Women’s Day date was moved to March 8 in 1913.
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day campaign is #iChooseToChallenge which aims to celebrate the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future.
According to the official IWD website, “We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women‘s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let’s all choose to challenge.”
In celebration of International Women’s Day, women at Silverbird Group joins the world to stand up and #choosetochallenge all forms Gender disparity, inequality and discrimination against women.
