Kunle Afolayan Reacts Over Soaring Energy Costs in Nigeria

Renowned Nigerian filmmaker and entrepreneur, Kunle Afolayan, has expressed deep frustration over the rising cost of energy in Nigeria,

He describes the situation as unsustainable for businesses and creative ventures across the country.

The award-winning director, known for blockbuster productions such as Aníkúlápó and Citation, revealed that he currently spends about ₦11 million monthly on diesel to power operations at his popular film and tourism hub, KAP Film Village and Resort.

Afolayan shared the revelation while speaking about the growing financial strain caused by Nigeria’s unreliable electricity supply and escalating fuel prices. According to him, maintaining constant power is essential to keep the resort, film production facilities, and hospitality services running smoothly.

The filmmaker noted that despite the massive investment made in the resort to promote tourism and create opportunities for young creatives, the high cost of diesel and alternative energy sources continues to erode profitability.

He warned that if the trend persists, many businesses in the entertainment and hospitality sectors could struggle to survive.

Afolayan emphasised that entrepreneurs should not have to shoulder the heavy burden of generating their own electricity in a country with abundant energy resources. He urged authorities to prioritise sustainable power solutions and infrastructure that will allow businesses to operate efficiently.

The filmmaker also pointed out that stable electricity would significantly reduce operating costs for industries such as filmmaking, where lighting, editing suites, production equipment, and hospitality services require uninterrupted power supply.

Industry observers say Afolayan’s comments highlight a wider challenge faced by Nigerian businesses, particularly those in the creative economy, where high energy costs continue to threaten growth and innovation.

Despite the challenges, Afolayan reaffirmed his commitment to expanding the vision behind KAP Film Village, which has become a cultural destination attracting filmmakers, tourists, and creative professionals from across Nigeria and beyond.
