The founding bassist of Limp Bizkit, Sam Rivers, has passed away at 48.
The band announced his death on October 18, 2025, describing him as “the heartbeat” and “the soul in the sound” of their music.
A Founding Force in Nu-Metal
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Rivers was instrumental in shaping Limp Bizkit’s signature blend of rock, metal, and hip-hop. He met frontman Fred Durst while working at a local Chick-fil-A, leading to the formation of the band in 1994. Rivers contributed to all six of the band’s albums, including the multi-platinum hits Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water.
Health Struggles and Resilience
In 2015, Rivers took a hiatus from the band due to severe liver disease caused by excessive alcohol consumption. He underwent a liver transplant in 2017 and returned to the group in 2018, continuing to perform and record music.
Following Rivers’ passing, Limp Bizkit members, including DJ Lethal, paid tribute to him on social media. DJ Lethal shared a photo of Rivers wearing a “F**k Cancer” shirt, suggesting that cancer may have contributed to his death. The band expressed deep sorrow, stating, “We love you, Sam. We’ll carry you with us, always. Rest easy, brother. Your music never ends.”
Rivers’ contributions to Limp Bizkit’s sound and success have left an indelible mark on the music industry. His unique basslines and emotional depth were central to the band’s identity. As fans and fellow musicians mourn his loss, Rivers’ legacy continues to influence the nu-metal genre and beyond.
