Manchester United Sack Amorim After 14 Months

Manchester United have drawn the curtain on Rúben Amorim’s short and stormy reign, sacking the Portuguese coach after just 14 months in charge as pressure mounted over results, performances and internal unrest at Old Trafford.

The club confirmed the decision on Monday morning, appointing Under-18s coach and former United midfielder Darren Fletcher as interim boss ahead of the Premier League clash with Burnley.

High Hopes, Harsh Reality

Amorim arrived in November 2024 carrying significant expectations, having earned plaudits for his progressive football and domestic success at Sporting Lisbon. United hoped his modern tactical approach would spark a revival. Instead, his tenure became defined by inconsistency, growing frustration and an inability to steady the club’s long-term direction.

His final match — a 1–1 draw with Leeds United — proved a tipping point. What followed was a tense post-match press conference in which Amorim publicly questioned the club’s power structure, stressing that he was hired to be a manager rather than merely a coach. His pointed remarks toward the recruitment department and director of football Jason Wilcox reportedly deepened existing fractures behind the scenes.

Numbers That Told the Story

On the pitch, the results failed to justify patience. Amorim oversaw 63 matches in all competitions, winning just 24, with only 15 league victories from 47 Premier League games. United sat sixth at the time of his dismissal, far from the standards expected at one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The previous campaign was particularly bruising. United finished 15th in the league, their lowest position in decades, and endured further disappointment with a narrow defeat in the UEFA Europa League final — moments that compounded doubts about progress under Amorim.

Tension Behind Closed Doors

Sources close to the club suggest Amorim’s relationship with United’s hierarchy had been strained for months. Concerns over limited backing in the transfer market and restrictions on implementing his tactical philosophy created persistent friction. In a brief statement, the club acknowledged the decision was made after concluding there were “insufficient signs of development and on-field evolution.”

A Holding Pattern at Old Trafford

United thanked Amorim for his efforts and wished him well, but stressed the need for a reset as they look to stabilise their season. Darren Fletcher will take charge on an interim basis while the club begins the search for a permanent successor.

For supporters, Amorim’s departure is another chapter in a period of uncertainty that has followed the post-Ferguson era. As United once again hit the reset button, the hope is that the next appointment finally delivers the clarity, consistency and success that have remained frustratingly out of reach.
