‘Marty Supreme’ Becomes A24’s Biggest Box-Office Hit Ever

A24 has a new standard-bearer. Marty Supreme, led by Timothée Chalamet, has officially rewritten the indie studio’s record books, racing to nearly $149 million worldwide even before it reaches Chinese cinemas later this spring.

Released in U.S. theatres on Christmas Day 2025 and directed by Josh Safdie, the film has done what few A24 titles have managed: cross over from prestige favourite to full-blown global crowd-pleaser. In the process, it has surged past the studio’s former box-office champion, Everything Everywhere All at Once, to claim the top spot in A24’s history.

Loosely inspired by the life of iconic American table tennis player Marty Reisman, the sports dramedy centres on Chalamet’s character, Marty Mauser, a role that has drawn widespread praise for its intensity and emotional depth. That performance, combined with Safdie’s kinetic storytelling, has helped the film connect with audiences well beyond the arthouse crowd.

By early February 2026, Marty Supreme had already generated an estimated $92–95 million domestically, alongside $53–56 million from international markets. With its China debut scheduled for March 20, industry analysts expect those figures to climb sharply, potentially pushing the film toward the $170 million range in the coming months.

The success is especially striking given the film’s scale. With a reported budget of $60–70 million, Marty Supreme is the most expensive production A24 has ever backed — a bold gamble for a studio best known for modestly budgeted, director-driven projects. That gamble appears to have paid off, signalling that independent studios can still compete in box-office territory typically dominated by major Hollywood players.

Beyond ticket sales, awards buzz has fueled the film’s staying power. Marty Supreme has landed nine Academy Award nominations, including nods for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Chalamet, keeping it firmly in the cultural conversation as it continues its global rollout.

Observers point to the film’s balance of raw character study, classic sports-movie momentum, and star power as the secret to its appeal. It’s a reminder that critically respected films don’t have to sacrifice commercial success, a trend that appears to be gaining momentum across the industry.

For A24, Marty Supreme represents more than a new box-office milestone. It’s a statement of evolution — proof that the studio’s brand of daring, filmmaker-first cinema can scale up without losing its identity, and that the definition of “indie success” is broader than ever.
