Nigeria Wins Historic Commonwealth Women’s 4x100m Title

Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Grace Nwokocha of Team Nigeria’s women’s 4x100m relay team made history yesterday at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham by becoming the nation’s first women’s relay team to win a Commonwealth Games gold.

With a time of 42.10 seconds, the quartet broke the African mark of 42.22 seconds that they had established at the World Athletics championships in Oregon just a month earlier.

In the women’s 4x100m relay, Nigeria roared to an emphatic win, forcing England to settle for silver.

Tobi Amusan, who had just won the 100-meter hurdles gold earlier, gave the team a strong start before Rosemary Chukwuma’s strong third leg gave them an unbeatable lead.

Perfectly running the bend, Chukwuma gave off top place to Nwokocha, the current 100-meter champion from Nigeria.
