Pa Ayo Adebanjo: A Titan’s Final Bow - Charly Boy, Nigeria Mourn National Icon

Nigeria has lost a towering figure in its democratic history, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, and among those paying tribute is veteran entertainer and activist, Charly Boy, who honored the late statesman with a powerful farewell.

Taking to Instagram on February 20, 2025, Charly Boy, known for his fearless socio-political stance, shared a chillingly prophetic quote from Adebanjo that echoed his deep concerns about Nigeria’s political future. The post read:

“If Nigerians vote for Tinubu in the 2023 Presidential election, NIGERIANS WILL SUFFER. At 94, I may not be alive. While you suffer from the wrong choice of voting for Tinubu, I’ll be resting peacefully in my grave.”

In his caption, Charly Boy added: “What an old man sees sitting down, a young man cannot see standing up. RIP GREAT ONE!!!”

A Life of Unshaken Convictions

Born on April 10, 1928, in Ijebu Ogbo Oke, Ogun State, Pa Ayo Adebanjo was a man of principle, intellect, and unwavering commitment to justice. From his early days as a journalist to his pivotal role in Nigeria’s fight for independence, his life was defined by resistance against oppression.

His defiance cost him his job at the Ministry of Health after his participation in pro-independence protests, but it did not deter his resolve. Instead, he pursued a career in law, later being called to the English Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1961 before joining Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s chambers.

As a founding member of Afenifere, Adebanjo became a relentless advocate for democracy and Yoruba interests. His opposition to military rule, support for the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), and eventual endorsement of Peter Obi in the 2023 elections exemplified his commitment to principle over party loyalty.

A Nation Says Goodbye

Pa Adebanjo breathed his last on February 14, 2025, at his Lekki residence, surrounded by family. His wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, at 94, along with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, survive him.

In a heartfelt statement, his family honored his legacy: “We will forever cherish his commitment to fighting for truth, equity, and justice. His belief in a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was unwavering, and he fought for it until his last breath.”

Even President Bola Tinubu, despite their ideological differences, acknowledged the monumental loss: “Nigeria has lost a political leader whose decades of unwavering struggle for justice, democracy, and national unity have left an indelible mark on our nation’s history.”

As Nigeria mourns, one thing remains certain—Pa Ayo Adebanjo’s voice may be silent, but his impact will echo for generations to come.
