Portable Allegedly Beaten in Custody, Police Probe

Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has become the focus of a police investigation after a disturbing video surfaced online, allegedly showing him being assaulted while in custody.

The footage has triggered widespread outrage and renewed scrutiny of law-enforcement conduct in Nigeria.

The viral clip, which spread rapidly across platforms including X, shows the “Zazu” hitmaker shirtless, handcuffed and visibly shaken inside what appears to be a police facility in Ogun State. In the video, Portable can be heard crying and pleading, as voices believed to be those of officers are heard amid scenes suggesting physical assault.

Reacting to the public backlash, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that the singer was indeed arrested and remains in custody but distanced itself from the actions depicted in the video. The Command described the treatment shown as unprofessional and unacceptable, stressing that it runs contrary to police rules and human-rights standards.

Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi stated that while Portable’s arrest followed due process, no suspect should be subjected to abuse or humiliation. He also condemned the recording and circulation of suspects in custody, noting that such acts violate police regulations and compromise investigations. According to him, the Command has launched an internal probe to identify the officers involved, warning that anyone found culpable will face disciplinary and legal action.

Portable’s arrest is linked to a complaint of alleged assault filed by actress and content creator Omobolarinde Akinyanju, popularly known as Ashabi Simple, who shares a child with the singer. The incident reportedly occurred on January 1, 2026, at Portable’s bar in Ogun State, following a dispute connected to their personal relationship.

Beyond the circumstances of his arrest, Portable’s emotional reactions in the viral clips, including moments of lamentation and appeals for divine help, have drawn intense public attention. The episode has once again ignited conversations around police accountability, detainee rights, and the treatment of suspects, with many Nigerians calling for transparency and swift justice as the investigation unfolds.
