Portable’s Legal Turmoil: A Chronicle Of Controversy And Confrontation

Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, widely known as Portable, has once again found himself at the center of legal and public scrutiny.

On February 5, 2025, an incident at his establishment, Odogwu Bar, in the Oke-Osa, Tigbo Ilu area of Sango-Ota, Ogun State, escalated into a significant confrontation with government officials. This event has not only led to legal actions against his associates but has also intensified discussions about Portable’s recurring entanglements with controversy.

The Incident at Odogwu Bar

On the morning of February 5, officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development visited Odogwu Bar as part of their routine duties. Reports indicate that Portable, along with his associates, obstructed and assaulted these officials—Abidemi Onabanjo, Ramon Lateef, and Akinpelumi Oyero—while they were performing their lawful duties. The assailants were reportedly armed with cutlasses and guns during the attack.

Legal Repercussions

Following the altercation, nine individuals associated with Portable were arrested and arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Isabo, Abeokuta. The defendants—Nurudeen Warris (21), Adetola Alashe (25), Samuel Adeleke (28), Oluwaseun Ayenuwa (19), Oluwapelumi Adeosun (20), Gospel Kanu (20), Precious Ohiegebo (19), Ifeoluwa Babatunde (27), and Fatimo Muhammed (26)—faced a five-count charge. The charges included felony, assault, obstruction, armed violence involving cutlasses and guns, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

They pleaded not guilty and were granted bail of N5 million each, with sureties required to be licensed bondmen registered with the Ogun State government. The case has been adjourned until March 17, 2025, for hearing.

Government’s Response

In response to the incident, the Ogun State Government issued a stern warning to Portable, condemning his actions and describing them as unprovoked assaults on government officials. The Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding the law and maintaining decency across all sectors. He reiterated that the administration would not tolerate any unlawful acts and is dedicated to promoting the values of the Omoluabi ethos.

A History of Controversies

This event is not the first time Portable has been involved in controversies. Since his rise to fame with the hit song “Zazoo Zeh,” he has been associated with various incidents, including public disputes and altercations. In a previous case, Portable was arrested by the Ogun State Police Command after failing to comply with a 72-hour ultimatum to surrender himself in connection with an alleged assault. He was subsequently charged in the Ifo High Court in Ogun State.

Property Seizures

The Ogun State Government has also taken action against Portable’s properties. His uncompleted building and hotel were sealed due to alleged illegal development without the necessary approval permits.

Current Status

As of now, Portable remains at large. Authorities are urging him to surrender to law enforcement agencies to address the allegations against him. The government has made it clear that it will not condone any form of rascality or unlawful behavior, regardless of an individual’s status or popularity.

Conclusion

The situation continues to develop, and the public awaits further updates on the legal proceedings involving Portable and his associates. This incident adds to the complex narrative of a musician whose career has been as much about controversy as it has been about music.
