Roma Shock Barca With Comeback Win
AS Roma pulled off one of the greatest second-leg comebacks by beating Barcelona 3-0 and reach the Champions League semi-finals on away goals.
Barca were heavy favourites to progress after a 4-1 first-leg win, but fell apart to Roma’s brilliant showing.
Roma forward Edin Dzeko had opened the scoring when he beat the offside trap and latched onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Daniele De Rossi to score in the sixth minute, lifting the hopes of the boisterous home fans in the Olympic Stadium.
Captain De Rossei scored a 58th minute penalty after Dzeko was fouled by Gerard Pique then defender Kostas Manolas scored the crucial third goal, heading in at the near post with eight minutes remaining.
Barca fielded the team that thrashed Roma in the first leg with the help of two own goals and were overwhelming favourites to go through but the five-times European champions barely got a foothold in the game after falling behind to Dzeko’s opener.
The crowd at the Stadio Olimpico erupted at the final whistle as the Roma substitutes and coaching staff piled on to the pitch to celebrate with the players.
There were tears in the stands from those watching, not quite believing what they had witnessed.
