Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning bicycle kick for Real Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final clash with Juventus has been voted UEFA’s Goal of the Season for 2018.
The former Real Madrid striker, who has now joined the Bianconeri, beat off competition from 11 nominees from the various UEFA competitions to win the award for his goal in last season’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg.
Ronaldo’s strike, which was applauded on the night by his opposing – and it turned out future – fans, topped the poll with nearly 200,000 of the total 346,915 votes.
He took to his Instagram page posting a video clip of his goal while thanking the fans for their votes with the caption:
“Thanks to everyone who voted for me. Will never forget that moment, specially the reaction of the fans in the stadium. #UEFA Goal of the Season #SpecialMoment”
He succeeds his new Juve colleague Mario Mandžukić, who won last year for goal against Madrid in the UEFA Champions League final, while Lionel Messi took the award in both 2014/15 and 2015/16.
Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen was also among the nominees for his counterattack finish in Denmark’s World Cup playoff victory over the Republic of Ireland.
