Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes the Red Devils have taken a crucial step toward rediscovering their old identity after a pulsating 3–2 Premier League victory over Arsenal at the Emirates.
The win capped a perfect start to life under interim head coach Michael Carrick, coming just days after United’s statement triumph over Manchester City in the derby. Two games, two wins — and suddenly, belief is back at Old Trafford.
That result has lifted United into fourth place, firmly in the hunt for a Champions League return next season. But for Rooney, it’s not just about the points — it’s about the attitude shift.
“The change in Manchester United over a two-game period is incredible,” Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show on BBC Sounds.
“Michael and his coaches deserve huge credit for that.”
The former captain pointed to a renewed sense of focus, togetherness and belief within the squad — qualities he felt had been missing in recent times.
“You can see the attitude in the players now. There’s a unity and purpose we didn’t really see before,” Rooney added.
“They went to Arsenal believing they could win.”
Despite not creating a flood of chances, United looked composed and in control for long spells. Even when Arsenal struck first, the response impressed Rooney the most.
“Arsenal started well, but when United went a goal down, the reaction was excellent,” he said.
“They stayed calm, stuck to the plan, and in the end, they deserved the win.”
With confidence growing on and off the pitch, Rooney believes United may finally be moving in the right direction again — not just chasing results, but rebuilding the mentality that once defined the club’s glory years.
