Serena Williams Withdraws From 2018 Italian Open
Serena Williams has announced that she is withdrawing from this month’s Italian Open.
This is coming just 5 days after she pulled out of the WTA event in Madrid, saying she needed more time to prepare for her first clay season since giving birth to her daughter.
The sitting out from the Italian Open puts her participation in the French Open, which kicks off May 27, in doubt.
Serena is a 23-time Grand Slam champion who has won the Italian Open 4 times but has not played on clay since Roland Garros in 2016.
She returned to the WTA Tour in March and reached the third round at Indian Wells, where she was beaten by sister Venus, before falling in the first round of the Miami Open to Japan’s Naomi Osaka.
Her ranking has also dropped from 1 to 454.
