Southampton March Towards Safety With Win Over Swansea
Substitute Manolo Gabbiadini scored a 72nd minute goal to give Southampton three vital points in their fight for safety in the Premier League beating fellow relegation rivals Swansea City 1-0 last night at the Liberty Stadium in South Wales.
Both teams needed a win to be in a strong position to be in the Premier League next season. A tense game to say the least, Gabbiadini’s scrappy goal from a rebound from a corner was his first since January but was so important for the Saints as Swansea’s future is now out of their hands.
This puts the Saints 16th in the Premier League table three points ahead of Swansea with a better goal difference. As a result of the win, West Bromich Albion were relegated from the Premier League joining Stoke City in the Championship next season. Despite the late push by West Brom under caretaker manager Darren Moore, who recently won PL Manager of the Month for April, Southampton’s win sealed West Brom’s fate.
Relegation candidates Huddersfield Town will be playing Chelsea tonight knowing a win will get Swansea City relegated ensuring Premier League safety next season. Huddersfield are 17th in the league table three points ahead of Swansea but a loss today against the blues will drag this relegation dogfight to the last day of the season which is on Sunday.
