Bayern Munich Crush Barca To Reach Champions League Semifinals

German champions Bayern Munich utterly humiliated fellow European heavyweights Barcelona with an extraordinary 8-2 demolition job on Friday that sent them through into the semifinals of the Champions League.

It began with Bayern grabbing a fourth minute lead when Mueller collected Ivan Perisic‘s cross from the left and played a clever one-two with Robert Lewandowski before drilling home.

But within three minutes Barca had struck back – Clement Lenglet‘s super long ball found Jordi Alba in space and David Alaba’s attempt to deal with his searching cross ended up flying past his own keeper Manuel Neuer.

Barca almost took the lead when Luis Suarez was denied by Neuer and Lionel Messi hit the post with a curling cross through a packed box.

Soon after that Bayern regained control of the game when Perisic smashed in a deflected second before Serge Gnabry finished off a delightful ball over the top from Leon Goretzka, and Muller poked in his second at the near post for a commanding first half 4-1 lead.

In the second half Suarez executed a neat turn and finish to give Barca some hope but that was snuffed out by arguably the pick of the goals – a Joshua Kimmich side-foot finish following some stunning skill and speed and excellent delivery from Alphonso Davies.

Lewandowski headed his 14th Champions League goal in just eight games before salt was poured into Barca’s deep wounds as Philippe Coutinho – on loan from the Spanish side – netted a seventh and eighth via close-range finishes after coming off the bench.

Bayern are by far the most decorated side left in the competition, having won the European Cup/Champions League on five occasions, most recently in 2013 and look comfortably the strongest left in this season’s tournament.

They will find out their semi-final opponent on Saturday, when England’s last remaining challenger Manchester City face French side Lyon.
