League Cup: Chelsea Beat Villa In Shootout To Reach Last 16

Reece James scored the winning penalty in a shootout as Chelsea reached the last 16 of the Carabao Cup at Aston Villa’s expense.

The full-back fired home the Blues’ final penalty to win the shootout 4-3.

Much-maligned German forward Timo Werner headed Chelsea into the lead in the 54th minute, finishing off James’ cross for his first goal in 11 games.

With Villa fan Prince William watching from the stands, 19-year-old striker Cameron Archer equalised in the 64th minute with a close-range header from Matty Cash‘s cross.

James scored Chelsea’s winning penalty in the shoot-out after Ashley Young and Marvelous Nakamba missed for Villa.

Chelsea will host Southampton in the last 16 of a competition they last won in 2014-15.

Wednesday’s result extends the reigning European champions’ unbeaten start to the season, which has also seen them top the Premier League with 13 points from five matches.
