The Super Eagles managed only a 1–1 draw against South Africa in their latest 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, prolonging their uphill battle to secure top spot in Group C.
South Africa struck first in the 29th minute. Themba Zwane found space behind Nigeria’s defense and powered a low shot past goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to give Bafana Bafana the lead.
Just before the halftime whistle, Nigeria mounted a sharp response. Fisayo Dele-Bashiru unleashed a stunning strike from outside the box to level the score and send both teams into the break deadlocked.
Despite dominating large portions of the second half, Nigeria couldn’t convert their chances. The woodwork and South African keeper Ronwen Williams kept the scoreline level, as the Super Eagles missed the chance to swing momentum in their favour.
Nigeria’s draw leaves them winless in three qualifiers, with their World Cup aspirations hanging in the balance. As of now, they sit in fifth place in Group C, well behind group leaders South Africa.
With only the group winner securing direct qualification and a playoff path for the runner-up, Nigeria must quickly turn draws into wins if they hope to remain in the hunt.
With key fixtures ahead, including home advantage matches they must win, the Super Eagles are under pressure to revive their campaign. Tactical adjustments, sharper finishing, and perhaps a bit of luck may be the only things sustaining their fading World Cup hopes.
