Veteran Nollywood actor, Sylvester Madu, known for his roles in action-packed films, recently found himself at the center of social media discussions after a video surfaced showing him selling clothes in an Enugu market.
The footage led to widespread speculation that he had resorted to selling second-hand clothes, commonly referred to as okrika, due to financial hardship.
Addressing the Misconception
In response to the viral video, Madu clarified that he was not selling second-hand clothes but brand-new items imported from the United States. He explained that he purchases clothing during sales in the U.S. and resells them in Nigeria. Madu emphasized that the fact the clothes were displayed on the ground does not indicate they were used items.
A Seasoned Entrepreneur
Madu revealed that he has been involved in the clothing business for over 13 years, operating multiple shops and employing several staff members. Despite having employees, he chooses to be hands-on in his business operations, stating, “I don’t do big man, I go to the field to sell by myself.” He highlighted that his active involvement is a personal choice and not a result of financial desperation.
Standing Up to Critics
The actor expressed disappointment over the negative assumptions made about his entrepreneurial efforts. He questioned why engaging in legitimate business would be seen as a fall from grace, emphasizing the importance of hard work and integrity. Madu’s response has sparked conversations about the dignity of labor and the societal perceptions of success and failure.
By addressing the rumours head-on, Sylvester Madu has not only defended his reputation but also shed light on the challenges faced by public figures who pursue ventures outside their primary professions.
