A new report from Common Sense Media has raised alarms about the growing influence of AI-generated misinformation on American teenagers.
According to the study, around 35% of teens have been tricked by fake content produced using artificial intelligence—content that’s becoming harder to distinguish from the truth.
The rapid growth of AI technology has made it easier than ever to create realistic fake news—whether through doctored images, manipulated videos, or fabricated articles. This surge in deceptive content has fueled concerns about how it is affecting young audiences who may struggle to separate fact from fiction.
Surveying 1,000 teens aged 13 to 18, the study found that 35% had fallen for AI-generated content, while 41% admitted to encountering misleading information that was not AI-created but still deceptive.
The ease with which AI can mimic reality is making it increasingly difficult for teens to trust the information they come across online. This situation highlights the growing need for media literacy education, teaching young people to critically assess the validity of content they encounter on the web.
Experts are calling for greater emphasis on digital literacy programs to equip teenagers with the tools they need to verify the authenticity of what they see online.
