Tonto Dikeh Advocates For English In Online Disputes

Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh recently took to Instagram to address a linguistic concern prevalent on the platform.

In her Instagram story, she humorously appealed to Yoruba speakers to conduct their online disputes in English, emphasizing that not all users understand Yoruba. She also extended this plea to Ghanaians, highlighting the importance of inclusivity in online interactions.

Dikeh’s message read:

“Dear Yoruba people, Abeg, when una dey try to fight (especially for this Obasanjo app), make una try dey fight with English. How we want take know who dey win fight. Ghana people una dey this Whatsapp group too. Make una they fight with English. All love from a vawulence prefect.”

Her statement sparked discussions about language use on social media, especially in multicultural settings like Nigeria. While some agreed with her suggestion, others believed that individuals should be free to express themselves in their native languages. This conversation underscores the balance between cultural expression and inclusivity in digital communication.

This isn’t the first time Dikeh has used her platform to share her thoughts on social issues. In December, she alerted Nigerians to a new scam where individuals falsely accuse others in public of making fake transfers, aiming to extort money by creating a scene. She advised the public to stay vigilant and safe.

Dikeh’s recent appeal brings to light the complexities of language use in digital spaces. In countries like Nigeria and Ghana, where multiple languages coexist, choosing a common language like English can foster inclusivity. However, it’s essential to respect and preserve native languages, finding a balance that honors cultural diversity while promoting clear communication.

Tonto Dikeh’s call for using English in online disputes serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusivity in our digital interactions. As social media continues to connect diverse populations, being mindful of language can help ensure that conversations are accessible and respectful to all participants.
