Nollywood actress Bolaji Ogunmola has opened up about the harsh realities she encountered while trying to build a career in the Nigerian film industry.
This development reveals how colourism and body stereotypes nearly defined her path in entertainment.
Speaking during a recent interview with media personality Jay On-Air, the actress disclosed that her dark skin tone and curvy body shape often influenced the kind of characters filmmakers believed she should portray. According to her, she was repeatedly cast in “side chick” roles at a time when lighter-skinned actresses were considered the industry standard for lead characters.
Ogunmola said many producers appeared determined to confine her to a particular image, making it difficult for her to explore more complex and diverse roles despite her talent and versatility.
The actress, who gained public attention after competing in the Next Movie Star reality show before featuring in productions like Okon Goes to School, explained that navigating Nollywood came with constant pressure to prove herself beyond physical appearance.
Despite the challenges, she remained focused on building a lasting career and refused to allow industry stereotypes limit her ambitions.
Beyond acting, Ogunmola revealed that she deliberately ventured into business early because she never envisioned herself surviving solely on acting or working a conventional office job. She described herself as naturally entrepreneurial and stressed the importance of financial stability for entertainers whose fame may not last forever.
The filmmaker also encouraged upcoming creatives to think beyond social media popularity and build sustainable careers that can outlive temporary trends in the entertainment industry.
Reflecting on her growth behind the scenes, Ogunmola credited respected filmmaker Biodun Stephen as one of the major influences in her journey into movie production. She noted that many of her skills were developed through years of learning, observing and working closely with experienced professionals on set.
Her revelations have since sparked fresh conversations online about colourism, beauty standards and representation in Nollywood, with many fans applauding her for speaking openly about an issue many actors quietly experience in the industry.
