An explosion shook the Kabong area of Jos, Plateau State, early Saturday morning, reportedly killing seven people and injuring several others.
The incident, which took place around 2 a.m., was caused by a power transformer explosion in the Gada Biyu neighborhood.
The blast triggered a massive fire that caused significant property damage, destroyed homes, and left the community in a state of shock.
According to local eyewitnesses, two of the deceased were from the same family. Jos Electricity Distribution Company responded with a statement expressing their condolences and explaining that the explosion likely stemmed from a snapped high-tension wire falling onto low-tension lines, resulting in dangerously high voltage.
The company has committed to investigating the root cause to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities are continuing the investigation, while community members and emergency responders work to aid the victims and assess further risks.
