Nigerian heavyweight boxer Efe Ajagba has issued a bold challenge to former unified world champion Anthony Joshua, questioning his Nigerian identity and asserting his claim as Africa’s top heavyweight.
Ajagba, born in Ughelli, Delta State, Nigeria, and currently holding a professional record of 20 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw, has been vocal about his desire to face Joshua in a bout that would determine the continent’s premier boxer.
In a recent interview, Ajagba dismissed Joshua’s connection to Nigeria, stating, “He might have just been there, and that’s where his parents came from, but for me, I’m the original Nigerian, to be honest. Not Joshua; that man has not experienced Nigeria.” He further criticized Joshua for only engaging with Nigeria for social media content, asserting, “He just goes there for social media content. It’s ok, it’s all good—but I’m the original Nigerian.”
Ajagba’s comments come in the wake of his majority draw against Congolese contender Martin Bakole in Riyadh, a bout that was seen as a stepping stone towards a potential world title shot. Despite the draw, Ajagba remains confident in his abilities and has set his sights on Joshua, stating that a fight between them would be a dream come true, especially if held in Nigeria.
The prospect of an Ajagba-Joshua showdown has generated significant interest within the boxing community, with fans eager to see a clash between two of Africa’s most prominent heavyweights. While no official plans have been announced, the tension between the fighters continues to build, setting the stage for a potential blockbuster bout that would captivate audiences both on the continent and around the world.
