ID Cabasa Slams Akon’s Afrobeats Claim

Senegalese-American singer Akon has recently stirred controversy with his claim of having played a pivotal role in creating Afrobeats.

In an interview with American talk show host Sherri Shepherd, Akon recunted his involvement with Nigerian artists in the late 2000s, stating, “What we created in Nigeria was what you see and hear now as Afrobeats.” During that period, he highlighted his collaborations with artists like Wizkid, P-Square, and D’banj.

These assertions have been met with skepticism and criticism from many Nigerians, who argue that Akon’s role in the development of Afrobeats is being overstated. Critics emphasize that while Akon may have collaborated with Nigerian artists, the genre’s roots and evolution are deeply embedded in African musical traditions and the efforts of local artists and producers.

Veteran Nigerian producer ID Cabasa, known for his significant contributions to the Nigerian music industry, has also weighed in on the matter. He has previously expressed concerns about the misrepresentation of Afrobeats’ origins, particularly criticizing attempts by foreign entities to redefine the genre. Cabasa emphasized the importance of preserving the authentic narrative of Afrobeats, stating, “We should take Afrobeats to the world because anything you keep to yourself can potentially die. As much as we take it to the world, we should retain the narrative of the origin.”

The debate underscores ongoing tensions regarding the global recognition of Afrobeats and the importance of acknowledging its true origins and the artists who have been instrumental in its rise.
