Gianluca Prestianni has been hit with a six-match suspension after UEFA found him guilty of homophobic conduct during a heated European encounter.
The disciplinary action follows an investigation into an incident involving Vinícius Júnior during a UEFA Champions League playoff between Benfica and Real Madrid earlier in the year.
Tensions flared during the February clash when Vinícius alerted the referee to alleged abuse, forcing a temporary halt in play and triggering immediate concern across the stadium. While early speculation pointed toward racist remarks, UEFA’s findings later confirmed the language used was homophobic.
In its ruling, UEFA imposed a six-game ban on Prestianni, though half of that suspension has been deferred for a two-year probation period. The sanction also accounts for a match already served during a provisional suspension, meaning the immediate impact may be reduced—provided there are no further violations.
The governing body is also seeking to extend the ban’s recognition beyond domestic competitions, potentially enforcing it across international fixtures as part of a wider disciplinary framework.
The incident adds to football’s ongoing struggle with discrimination, with UEFA reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance against all forms of abuse. For Prestianni, the decision represents a significant early-career setback—and a stark reminder of the game’s tightening grip on player conduct.
